Collagen protein consists essentially of 3 amino acids: glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline. The body produces its own collagen every day, but as production declines with age, the available amount of collagen quickly becomes insufficient, and different parts of the body gradually deteriorate. Hydroxyproline, which is critical for the stability of collagen, is synthesized by hydroxylation of the amino acid proline; the reaction requires organic silicon and Vitamin C to allow the addition of oxygen. The modern-day diet is typically low in silicon. The highest percentage of organic silicon is found in bamboo; nettle contains a fair amount and promotes its absorption.
Silicon is a structural element of connective tissue and enters into the constitution of major macromolecules such as elastin, collagen, proteoglycans and glycoproteins, promoting their regeneration. Silicon content is closely correlated with optimal skin condition, such as the rate of hydration, elasticity, absence of wrinkles and expression lines, and the capacity for healing and regeneration.
It also acts as a metabolic protector, acting at various levels:
It opposes lipid peroxidation responsible for the release of free radicals;
It counteracts the cross-linking and enzymatic glycosylation of proteins constituting connective tissue that cause its stiffness and sclerosis;
Regulates and stimulates fibroblast mitosis and because of this property plays a critically important role in the regeneration process of dermal and epidermal cells;
It is a cofactor of elastin synthesis.
MSM (MethylSulfonyl Methane) is a form of biologically active sulfur, basically organic sulfur in its natural form, which can be easily integrated into the body without causing allergic side effects. It is commonly called the “beauty mineral” because it makes hair shiny and soft and skin clear and youthful. MSM restores the formation of cross-links in collagen while preserving its elasticity; it is considered synergistic in stimulating collagen synthesis for the amino acids cystine, glycine, hydroxyproline, ornithine alpha keto glutarate, and silicon. MSM is also a powerful antioxidant, capable of hindering and deactivating the action of free radicals.
