Answers to frequently asked questions about dietary supplements

OUR FOOD SUPPLEMENTS

According to the definition of the Ministry of Health, a food supplement is defined as a food product intended to supplement the common diet and which constitutes a concentrated source of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals or other substances having a nutritional or physiological effect, suitable for promoting the mental and physical well-being of the person. Specifically but not exclusively, amino acids, essential fatty acids, fibers, and extracts of plant origin, both single- and multi-compound, in pre-dosed forms, are also dietary supplements.

Our dietary supplements come in the form of capsules, tablets, powders, creams or liquids.

Dietary supplements are products made from vitamins, minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, plant fibers, probiotics, and herbs, intended to supplement or supplement the diet, while a drug is intended to prevent, treat, or cure a disease.

Dietary supplements are not drugs and cannot be used as such.

The distinction between dietary supplements and drugs is based on the different purposes of use: nutritional supplements are wellness promoters and aimed at people in good health. Medications are healing tools aimed at people who are ill.

Nutritional supplements and drugs may share the same active ingredients, but in nutritional supplements the content of the active ingredient is lower than in drugs. Thus it can be said that nutritional supplements promote conditions of well-being by assisting the physiological functions of the body, while drugs restore, correct and modify physiological functions by exerting pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action.

The ingredients allowed within dietary supplements are: vitamins and minerals, substances having a nutritional or physiological effect (e.g., caffeine, amino acids, essential fatty acids, fiber, and extracts of plant origin), and other substances that are added to active ingredients for the purpose of improving their chemical and physical characteristics to enhance their activity.

Yes, there are limits for some substances. These limits are regulated at the national level, including on the basis of European guidelines. For reasons of consumer health protection, the Italian Ministry of Health publishes and periodically updates the list, albeit not exhaustive, of nutrients and substances with a nutritional or physiological effect used in food supplements and, where necessary, reports their limits.

Yes, herbal substances can be included within supplements. In Italy there are two lists of permitted plants. These lists specify the species and the relevant part of the plant that can be used.

In order to market a dietary supplement in Italy, the company responsible for food safety must initiate the notification procedure with the Ministry of Health. Before initiating this process, the company must ensure that the product complies with European and national regulations regarding both composition and labeling.

At the notification stage, the label will be filed, which will be evaluated in a timely and rigorous manner by the Ministry of Health

The labeling of food supplements follows the provisions of the European Regulation on the provision of food information to consumers and the Legislative Decree implementing the Food Supplements Directive. Some of the mandatory elements are: name, product classification, ingredient list and mandatory warnings.

In addition, the regulations provide for additional supplementary or optional warnings that are established depending on the composition and type of product.

For the advertising of food and supplements in Italy there is no authorization process; the verification of the conformity of the advertising message with the regulations in force is totally entrusted to the responsibility of the owner of the product.

However, there is a very punctual and careful supervision and control activity by the Ministry of Health, AGCOM (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato) and the carabinieri of NAS (Nucleo Antisofisticazioni e Sanità).

Yes it is possible, the important thing is that the advertising complies with Legislative Decree 169 of 2004, Reg. 1924 of 2006 and the Ministerial and European Commission Guidelines. In summary, current regulations state that unauthorized properties cannot be attributed to dietary supplements.
